Louis-Emile PINEL DE GRANDCHAMP (1831–1894). Portrait of a man. Oil on oval canvas, signed on the left-hand side, dated ‘1857’ and located in ‘Const°le’ (Constantinople). 62 x 51 cm. (some slight flaking and wear/scratches around the edges; one restoration) The son of Jean-François PINEL de GRANDCHAMP and Marie-Madeleine PINEL de GRANDCHAMP, Louis-Emile PINEL de GRANDCHAMP was a French Orientalist painter born in Paris on 14 July 1820. He was a pupil of Hippolyte DUBOIS and later of Edouard PICOT at the École Royale des Beaux-Arts in Paris. He made his debut at the Salon at the age of 18 with two portraits. In 1849, wishing to further his artistic education, he set off for Constantinople as secretary to SOBI-PACHA, whose father was governor of Thessaly. Whilst there, he painted portraits of a number of senior officials of the Ottoman Empire. On his return to France in 1865, he began to produce charming Orientalist works, which were in vogue at the Paris Salon des Beaux-Arts, where he made his debut the following year. For twenty years, he was a regular participant in the Salon’s annual exhibition, exhibiting his works there from 1866 to 1889.
