Lorraine School, c. 1760, from the circle of Jean-Baptiste CLAUDOT, known as CLAUDOT DE NANCY The defence of Blâmont Fortress in 1638; The defence of Mandres-aux-Quatre-Tours Castle in 1633. Pair of canvases Height: 87 cm Width: 120 cm Both paintings bear inscriptions: On the first: “Cruenta albi montis obsidio. As long as the prince and the fatherland are victorious whilst upholding the law, the vanquished perish in the fortress, having triumphed in death. Joannes de Klopstein, nobleman of Lotharingia, fearless rector of the town and fortress in the year …” (the date is illegible). On the second: “Triumphalis exitus de Castro de Mendres ad quatuor turres. Turribus egre ditur, ditatus Martis honore, quas custodierat callidus, artis ope. Franciscus de Mauljean, nobleman of Lotharingia, prefect of the cohort”. Previous restorations, areas missing, flaking and scratches. The first painting depicts the defence of Blâmont Fortress in 1638, during the Thirty Years’ War. The Lorraine governor Jean de Klopstein, whose family coat of arms appears in the bottom left-hand corner of the painting, held out against the troops of Bernard of Saxe-Weimar before being captured and executed following the capture of the fortress. The inscriptions read: “The bloody siege of the White Mountain. A victor defending the rights of his prince and his homeland, he perished in the citadel, overcome by a triumphant death. Johannes de Klopstein, a nobleman from Lorraine and intrepid commander of the town and the citadel, in the year 1638.” The second painting depicts the defence of Mandres-aux-Quatre-Tours Castle in 1633, during the invasion of Lorraine by the armies of Louis XIII. François de Mauljean, commander of the garrison whose coat of arms appears on the cart, held out for several days with just seventeen men against a French army of around 6,000 soldiers, before capitulating. After its capture, the castle was dismantled on Richelieu’s orders to prevent any further resistance from Lorraine. The inscriptions read: “Triumphal exit from the Château de Mandres-aux-Quatre-Tours. He emerges from the ramparts, crowned with the honours of Mars, those very ramparts which he had defended thanks to his military prowess.
