Description
VATICAN. Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulchre of Jerusalem (reorganised in 1847). Ladies’ Grand Officer’s insignia comprising, in its case lined with embossed leather bearing the Cross of Jerusalem, a silver (925/00) plaque with diamond-shaped points (diameter 86 mm, gross weight: 88.29 g), the enamelled vermeil breast badge (925/00) suspended from a knotted ribbon (width of cross 52 mm – gross weight: 49.15 g), the enamelled silver miniature (diameter 17 mm) and the lapel pin (diameter 13 mm). Provenance: Estelle R[egan]. CRANE (1898–after 1966), USA, Dame Grand Cross of the Order. Her husband, Dr George J. Crane (1893–1966), was a Knight Grand Cross of the OESSJ and a Knight of the Sovereign Order of Malta. Both were known for their charitable work in New York. Pope Leo XIII gave his approval for the admission of women into the Order in 1888. Several isolated cases had existed since 1871.
