Description
IMPERIAL CHINA. A patinated and partially gilt bronze snuffbox, decorated in high relief with 18 Buddhist Arhats-Luohan (i.e. the original disciples of Gautama Buddha) against a background of clouds, each in a different posture, as a sign of prosperity and good fortune. Qianlong mark under the base. Possibly 18th century. Height 7 cm.
Similar examples exist (notably in the Palace Museum), but in porcelain imitating bronze.
