[Watchmaking]. [GONDY (Junius)]. The Art of Understanding and Maintaining Wristwatches and Clocks. Lyon, A. Storck & Cie, 1899. Small 8vo, 319 pp. 107 illustrations in the text. Red half-shagreen with corner pieces, spine with 5 decorated false ribs, gilt title, gilt year at the foot, gilt fillet around the covers, gilt head (L. Guétant).
First edition. Junius GONDY (1843–1901), a watchmaker and manufacturer active in Besançon in the late 19th century, produced true works of art, notably pocket watches.
The binding is by Louis GUETANT (1848–1936) of Lyon, a pacifist and LDH activist. Self-taught, he served as president of the Lyon Bookbinders’ Guild. His bindings were exhibited posthumously at the International Exhibition of Arts and Techniques.
