Description
AMATO, Giovanni Maria (c. 1640–1732). *De principe templo Panormitano libri XIII*. Palermo: Aiccardo, Sidoti, Drago, 1728.
First edition of this history of Palermo Cathedral, with only one recorded auction appearance (RBH). In thirteen books, drawing upon documents, inscriptions and antiquarian sources, the author reconstructs the origins of the Church of Palermo, arguing that it was founded by Saint Peter the Apostle, and traces the development of the cathedral from the earliest Early Christian basilicas to the Norman building. Considerable attention is devoted to its architecture, relics and the funerary monuments of the emperors and sovereigns of Sicily. The appendix contains the first edition of the *Historia sui temporis* by Bartolomeo di Neocastro (c. 1240–1294), an important thirteenth-century Sicilian chronicle.
Folio (275 × 195 mm). With the final appendix containing Bartolomeo di Neocastro’s *Historia sui temporis* (occasional light marginal staining). Nineteenth-century half-leather binding, gilt title and decorations on the spine, yellowed edges (minor defects). (1)
