Description
DI BLASI, Giovanni Evangelista (1720–1812). A Chronological History of the Viceroys, Lieutenants and Presidents of the Kingdom of Sicily. Palermo: Solli, 1790–1791.
First edition of the monumental work by the Benedictine monk and royal historiographer Giovanni Evangelista Di Blasi. Regarded as one of the fundamental sources for the administrative and political history of the Kingdom of Sicily, the work provides a chronological account of the lives and administrations of the viceroys, lieutenants and presidents who governed the island from the Aragonese conquest to the eighteenth century. The chronology begins with Queen Blanche of Navarre, who served as Vicar of the Kingdom in 1409, and concludes with Serafino Filangeri, Archbishop of Palermo and President of the Kingdom in 1773.
5 volumes, 4to (256 × 205 mm). Frontispiece and 10 numbered plates; title-pages with engraved vignettes; engraved head- and tailpieces (foxing and browning). First-half twentieth-century vellum binding with gilt titles and decorations. (5)
