Description
EMANUELE GAETANI, Francesco Maria (1720–1802). *Della Sicilia Nobile*. Palermo: Bencivenga, 1754–1759. [WITH:] *Appendice alla Sicilia nobile*. Palermo: Bentivegna, 1775. First edition, rare on the market (only two auction appearances in the past 20 years, RBH), of this important work tracing the history of the Sicilian nobility, illustrating its genealogies, titles, fiefs and family histories, whilst also providing a valuable account of the political and institutional history of the Kingdom of Sicily, together with interesting historical and geographical digressions on the various parts of the island. The work remains one of the principal reference works for the study of the Sicilian aristocracy and an indispensable source for genealogical and heraldic research on the island. The set is supplemented by the sole volume of the appendix published by the author, which appeared fifteen years later; the second volume was published posthumously in 1897, edited by C. Crispo Moncada and A. Mango. Three parts in 4 volumes, together with one volume of the appendix, 5 volumes in total, folio (275 × 190 mm). Engraved vignettes on the title pages, a large folding map of Sicily at the beginning of the first volume, finely engraved headpieces, initials and tailpieces (the first volume is missing two text leaves, L2–L3; the second volume, containing the continuation of the second part, is missing the three portraits it was intended to contain; foxing and occasional water stains). Elegant, uniform contemporary full vellum binding, with gilt titles and ornaments on the spines. Provenance: contemporary manuscript annotations in the margins of the first volume of the second part.
