Description
[LAW]. *Siculae Sanctiones*. Palermo: Pietro Bentivenga, 1750–1758. First edition, with no recorded auction appearances (RBH), of the most comprehensive printed collection of the legislation of the Kingdom of Sicily, edited by the jurist Nicola Gervasi. The work systematically brings together the principal sanctions, constitutions, pragmatiche and legislative measures issued by the Sicilian sovereigns, many of which had previously been scattered amongst manuscripts or publications that were difficult to access. Enriched with a comprehensive analytical index, it became an indispensable reference work for magistrates, lawyers and officials of the Kingdom, contributing to the organisation and dissemination of Sicilian law in the early modern period. 7 volumes, folio (290 × 195 mm). Engraved frontispiece portrait in the first volume, title-pages with printer’s mark, woodcut initials, head- and tailpieces (occasional foxing and browning). Contemporary full vellum, handwritten titles on the spines. Provenance: Campione; contemporary owner’s signature on the title page of the first volume. (7)
