[SICILY – ENLIGHTENMENT]. A set of two rare Sicilian editions devoted to the culture and thought of the Enlightenment on the island. Catania and Palermo, 1794. An interesting set comprising two works emblematic of late eighteenth-century Sicilian culture. The first is the rare second edition (only two copies recorded in OPAC) of Giuseppe Logoteta’s moral poem, in which the celebrated jurist and poet from Catania addresses, from an Enlightenment perspective, the themes of ethics, virtue and the duties of man. The second is the first edition of Francesco Carelli’s eulogy to Gabriele Lancillotto Castello, Prince of Torremuzza, one of the foremost scholars, antiquarians and numismatists of his time, and a key figure in the rediscovery of Sicilian antiquities and the development of historical studies on the island.
