Description
[MALTA – SICILY]. A set of two works on the history and geography of Malta and Sicily. Frankfurt and Marseille, 1793–1805. An interesting set comprising two works devoted to Malta and Sicily during the age of the Grand Tour. The first is the first French edition of Louis de Boisgelin de Kerdu’s extensive history, one of the most comprehensive accounts of the island and the Order of Saint John of Jerusalem, published only a few years after the fall of the Order and the British conquest. The second is Patrick Brydone’s celebrated travel account, adapted by Joachim Heinrich Campe, which played a major role in shaping and disseminating the image of Sicily and Malta amongst European readers, combining observations on natural history, historical descriptions and vivid impressions of travel. BOISGELIN DE KERDU, Louis de (1758–1816). *Malte ancienne et moderne*. Marseille: Jean Achard fils et Cie, 1805. 2 volumes, 8vo (195 × 120 mm). 2 folding tables. Contemporary full marbled calf, smooth spine richly gilt, speckled edges. A fine copy of the 1805 edition with the Marseille imprint. [WITH:] BRYDONE, Patrick (1736–1818); CAMPE, Joachim Heinrich (1746–1818). *Le Voyage en Sicile et à Malte*. Frankfurt: Streng, 1793. 8vo (170 × 110 mm). Contemporary decorated paper wrappers. (2)
