Description
[MALTA – SICILY]. A collection of three legal defences concerning the fiscal and jurisdictional privileges of the Order of Malta in the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies. Naples, 1774–1790.
An interesting collection of three legal memoranda published in the Kingdom of Naples in defence of the Order’s privileges. The works document some of the principal legal disputes involving the Order, ranging from the protection of its fiscal immunities to the recognition of its rights of patronage over ecclesiastical benefices. In particular, the two works by Giandonato Rogadeo defend the Order’s exemption from the payment of adoe and quindenni, ancient taxes of feudal origin: the adoe were land taxes originally intended to cover the sovereign’s military expenses, whilst the quindenni were periodic contributions levied on fiefs, ecclesiastical benefices and corporations. Completing the collection is Francesco Valcarcel’s memorandum defending the Grand Priory of Barletta against the exercise of royal patronage, through which the Bourbon monarchy exerted influence over the political and economic administration of the priory.
