Description
[MALTA – PAPAL PRIVILEGES]. A collection of two legal pamphlets concerning the privileges and immunities of the Order of Saint John of Jerusalem. Rome, 1753–1767.
A collection of two rare official publications concerning the protection of the legal and patrimonial privileges of the Order of Saint John of Jerusalem within the Papal States. The first contains the apostolic letters of Benedict XIV confirming and extending the Order’s privileges, grants and jurisdictions; the second documents a dispute brought before the Sacred Congregation of Good Government – the supreme body of the Roman Curia responsible for financial administration and local communities – concerning the Order’s exemption from fiscal and municipal charges in Faenza, then part of the Papal States. The two works provide significant evidence of the complex system of immunities enjoyed by the Order during the second half of the eighteenth century.
BENEDICT XIV (Pope). Sanctissimi in Christo Patris et Domini Nostri Domini Benedicti Divina Providentia Papae XIV. Apostolic Letters concerning the confirmation and renewal of the privileges, graces and rights of the Military and Hospitaller Order of St John of Jerusalem: with certain declarations and additions. Rome: Printed by the Reverend Apostolic Chamber, 1753. 4to (285 × 200 mm). Title-page bearing the papal coat of arms flanked by Saints Peter and Paul. Bound, but without covers. [WITH:] [SACRED CONGREGATION OF GOOD GOVERNMENT]. Faventina regarding the claims of the Cameralium and Communitativorum for full restitution. For the Sacred Order of St John of Jerusalem. Rome: Typis Bernabò, 1767. 4to (280 × 205 mm). Title page with an engraved allegorical vignette of Justice. Bound, but without covers. (2)
