Description
[TURCOPILIER]. Decree of His Most Eminent Highness and His Most Wise Council on the Prerogatives of the Venerable Turcopilier. Malta: Mallia, 1784.
Decree of 12 July 1784 issued by the Grand Master and the Sacred Council of the Order of Saint John of Jerusalem (Order of Malta), officially defining the prerogatives of the Venerable Turcopilier, a dignity belonging to the Langue of England and responsible for the land defence of the island of Malta. The document reconstructs the existing regulations through medieval statutes, decrees of the Sacred Council and, above all, the Bull of Pope Nicholas V of 1448, establishing that the Turcopilier exercised command over the guards, Turcopoles, Bandoliers and Vigliacomiti, assigned military duties, issued the watchword, directed inspections of the fortifications and supervised the discipline of the troops. The decree also reaffirms the Turcopilier’s subordination to the Grand Master and specifies the procedures for the appointment and suspension of subordinate officers, thereby putting an end to previous disputes over interpretation. The lot also includes another copy of the same decree, enriched with more extensive notes and followed by a brief account on leaves 15 and 16 discussing a minor jurisdictional dispute concerning the punishment of a soldier guilty of causing a disturbance.
