Description
[MALTA]. Letters Patent of King Henry II... confirming the privileges granted to the Order of St John of Jerusalem by Richard, King of England... Paris: D’Houry, 1789.
A rare official edition published during the final years of the Ancien Régime, containing a collection of letters patent by which the kings of France, from Henry II to Louis XV, confirmed over the centuries the privileges, immunities and rights granted to the Order of Saint John of Jerusalem. The work also reproduces the earliest confirmations issued by the kings of England and France, beginning with the privileges granted by Richard the Lionheart during the period of the Crusades, providing important documentary evidence of the Order’s legal and patrimonial status within the Kingdom of France.
4to (250 × 200 mm). Title page, 69 pages, engraved headpiece bearing the Order’s coat of arms on the first leaf. Bound without covers. (1)
