Description
[ORDER OF MALTA – RESTORATION]. A collection of three official pamphlets concerning the Order’s claims following the loss of Malta. Paris and Verona, 1815–1822. A collection of three rare official pamphlets published during the Restoration, documenting the intense diplomatic activity of the Order of Saint John of Jerusalem following the loss of Malta in 1798. The works were presented on the occasion of three decisive moments in European politics: the restoration of the Bourbons in France (1815); the Congress of Aachen (1818), which marked the end of the Allied occupation of France; and the Congress of Verona (1822), the last of the great congresses of the Holy Alliance. On all three occasions, the Order asserted its claims to the recognition of its sovereignty, historical privileges and rights over the island of Malta. Claim by the Sovereign Order of St John of Jerusalem, addressed to the King of France and the Two Chambers, in the general interest of the Order, and in the particular interest of the three French-speaking communities. Paris: Le Normant, December 1815. 8vo (165 × 120 mm). 15 pages. Bound, but without covers. [WITH:] PETITION by the Sovereign Order of Saint John of Jerusalem to the Congress of Aachen. Paris: Adrien Égron, October 1818. 8vo (195 × 120 mm). 12 pages. Title page bearing the Order’s coat of arms. Publisher’s wrappers. [WITH:] RÉCLAMATION de l'Ordre de Saint-Jean de Jérusalem au Congrès de Vérone. [Colophon:] Verona: Libanti, 1822. 8vo (220 × 155 mm). 15 pages. Bound, but without covers. (3)
