[ORDER OF MALTA]. A collection of five legal pleadings and memorials concerning disputes between the Common Treasury, the Langue of Italy, the Priory of Venice and the other Langues. 1790–1793.
An interesting collection of documents relating to the institutional disputes that affected the governance of the Order of Malta during the final years of its independence, involving the Common Treasury, the Langue of Italy, the Grand Priory of Venice and the Order’s other principal Langues (Provence, Auvergne, France, Aragon, Germany, Castile and Anglo-Bavaria). The collection traces the development of the dispute from a legal, financial and constitutional perspective, highlighting the tensions that arose between the Order’s central administration and the autonomy of the national priories regarding the management of revenues and their respective jurisdictions. Completing the collection is a Venetian legal pamphlet concerning a commercial and maritime dispute involving the captain of the Venetian vessel *La Bella Madre*.
