Description
[ORDER OF MALTA]. A collection of seven reports on legal proceedings between the Common Treasury, the Grand Priories and the Langues of the Order. Venice: Casali and other printers, 1788–1795.
An interesting collection of legal pleadings, memorials, representations and remonstrances relating to some of the principal administrative disputes within the Order of Malta during the final years of the eighteenth century. The documents record institutional conflicts between the Common Treasury, the Grand Priories and the various Langues of the Order, concerning the administration of priory revenues, relations with the central government, the powers of the Vice-Chancellor, the representation of the Langues and the prerogatives of the Common Treasury. Of particular significance are the documents concerning the Grand Priory of Venice and disputes involving several of the principal Langues simultaneously, bearing witness to the administrative tensions that preceded the fall of Malta in 1798.
7 folio pamphlets, printed on laid paper and preserved as loose sheets. Some leaves show slight browning and normal signs of wear. Contents:
Submission to the Royal Fiscal College on behalf of the Venerable Grand Priory of Venice of the Sacred Order of St John of Jerusalem. Venice: Casali. [WITH:] Summary of the dispute between the Venerable Language of Auvergne and Chevalier de Bosredont de Vatanges. 1788. [WITH:] Memorandum on behalf of the Titulars of the Venerable Grand Priory of Germany against the Venerable Common Treasury. 1790.
