Description
ANGELUS DE CLAVASIO (c. 1411–1495). *Summa Angelica de casibus conscientiae*. Venice: Giorgio Arrivabene, 4 June 1492.
A study copy of the celebrated *Summa Angelica*, enriched with additions by the Dominican Girolamo Tornielli. One of the most successful manuals on moral theology and canon law of the late fifteenth century, this work by the Franciscan Angelo Carletti da Chivasso enjoyed extraordinary circulation throughout Europe from the publication of the Venetian first edition in 1476, becoming an indispensable reference work for confessors, preachers and ecclesiastical jurists. Organised alphabetically, the *Summa* systematically addresses the principal cases of conscience, examining moral, legal and pastoral issues ranging from adultery to simony, concubinage to usury, and slander to witchcraft, providing for each case an interpretation based on canon law and the writings of the principal medieval theologians.
4to (205 × 155 mm). Opening initial illuminated in gold, initials rubricated in red and blue, text in Gothic type in two columns (leaves 5–15 of the preliminary index and leaves u2–u7 of the text are missing; water-stains). Seventeenth- or eighteenth-century full vellum. Provenance: several early annotations throughout the text. (1)
