Description
ARISTOTLE (384–322 BC). Opera omnia. Florence: Heirs of Filippo Giunta, 1550–1552. A monumental Giunta edition of the complete works of Aristotle, one of the most ambitious publishing ventures of the Italian Renaissance and among the greatest achievements of the Giunta press. The edition was published in eleven volumes between 1550 and 1552 under the direction of Lucantonio Giunta the Younger, who contributed his own dedicatory epistle and, in recognition of the considerable investment required by the undertaking, secured privileges from Pope Julius III, King Henry II of France and the Republic of Venice. In terms of the scale of its conception, the quality of its execution and the prestige of the privileges granted for its protection, this edition ranks amongst the most important publishing projects devoted to Aristotle in the sixteenth century. 11 parts in 5 volumes, folio (307 × 215 mm). General title-page bearing the coat of arms of the dedicatee, Bernardo Salviati (1508–1568); each volume with a separate title-page bearing the Giunta printer’s mark; numerous illustrations in the text; Greek and Roman typefaces; woodcut initials and ornaments. Contemporary full vellum, with gilt-lettered spine labels added in the 19th century. Provenance: occasional contemporary marginal annotations. (5)
