Description
ARISTOTLE (384–322 BC); PATRIZI, Francesco (1529–1597). *Discussionum peripateticarum tomi IV. Quibus Aristotelicae Philosophiae universa Historia...*is set out. Basel: Perna, 1581.
Second edition of the most celebrated polemical work by the Dalmatian philosopher Francesco Patrizi. In the four books of the *Discussiones peripateticae*, the author subjects the Aristotelian system to a radical reappraisal, comparing its principles with the doctrines of the ancient philosophers and advocating a reassessment of the Platonic tradition. Destined to exert a profound influence on philosophical debate in the late Renaissance, the work represents one of the most significant challenges to Scholastic Aristotelianism and a fundamental stage in the development of modern philosophical thought.
Folio (340 × 225 mm). 4 parts in one volume. Large woodcut printer’s mark on the general title-page, portrait of Patrizi on the reverse, woodcut portrait of Aristotle repeated on the title-pages of the individual parts. Contemporary binding with full vellum spine. Provenance: S. Pauli Montis proprè Bononiam; fre Julius de Bononia, contemporary ownership inscriptions on the title-page. (1)
