Description
BRUNI, Leonardo (1370–1444). A book entitled *Aquila volante che se dilecta de scriptura antica*. Venice: Quarengi, 1506.
A study copy of this rare vernacular edition of one of the most successful compilations on the history of ancient Rome, a work traditionally attributed to Leonardo Bruni; this attribution has been confirmed by more recent scholarship, whilst acknowledging Guido da Pisa’s contribution to the composition of the text. The work traces the history of Rome from its origins through an original interweaving of history and legend, including episodes relating to the Trojan War, Julius Caesar, Cato and other figures of classical antiquity, in a narrative intended for a vernacular readership. The work’s considerable publishing success is evidenced by the four incunabula published between 1492 and 1497, followed by the present Venetian edition. Variant B, with variations in the colophon: line 1, … delectabile… instead of … admirabile...; line 2, ...doctissimo homo miser instead of ...doctissimo Monsignor; line 3, ...da Latino in uulgare sermone instead of ...da Latino in Vulgare toschano.
Folio (285 × 200 mm). Ornamental woodcut initials of various sizes (leaf A5 missing; browning and staining; restoration to the margin of the title page and final leaf). Nineteenth-century binding with vellum spine and gilt-lettered label. (1)
