[CLASSICS – DIPLOMATICS]. A group of three classical works in sixteenth-century editions, together with the first edition of Scipione Maffei’s *Istoria diplomatica*.
An interesting collection of humanist and antiquarian editions, together with the *Istoria diplomatica* by Scipione Maffei (1675–1755), a seminal work in the development of eighteenth-century historical scholarship and the critical study of documentary sources.
DEMOSTHENES (384–322 BC); AESCHINES (390–314 BC). Demosthenis et Aeschinis orationes atque epistolae. Basel: Johannes Oporinus, 1553. Parts one and two (of four) bound in a single volume, 8vo (185 × 120 mm). Early 19th-century half-leather binding, spine lettered and decorated in gilt. Provenance: Ex bibliotheca Philippi Xaverii Fanelli; ownership inscription on the title page. [IN LOT WITH:] CICERO, Marcus Tullius (106–43 BC). Printer’s mark on the title-page (repaired worm-eaten areas on the first few leaves). Nineteenth-century half-leather binding, spine lettered in gilt.
