Description
[JUDAICA – POPULAR ENGRAVINGS]. Iudicium Sanguinarium Iudaeorum contra Christum Salvatorem Mundi. 1585. [No place: no publisher].
An unrecorded large devotional print depicting the trial of Christ before the Sanhedrin, with Caiaphas and the other Jewish priests pronouncing the condemnation of the Saviour. The composition is a significant example of the anti-Jewish iconography widespread in early modern Europe, in which the accusation of deicide levelled against the Jewish people found extensive expression in images intended for popular devotion and religious propaganda. In its composition and arrangement of the scene, the print bears close similarities to the large three-sheet engraving published in Padua in the early seventeenth century and signed by Francesco Bertelli, son of Pietro Bertelli. The latter was active in Padua as a publisher of engravings from the late sixteenth century and as a printer between 1589 and 1596. It cannot be ruled out that this sheet represents an earlier iconographic model, perhaps linked to the Bertelli workshop, which was subsequently enlarged and reworked in the better-known Paduan edition; or, alternatively, that both engravings derive from a common prototype that has yet to be identified.
Engraving (sheet 382 × 550 mm), with an engraved key along the left and lower margins identifying the figures in the scene, each numbered on the plate (slight water-staining to the left margin, otherwise in good condition). (1)
