Description
LIVIUS, Titus (59 BC–AD 17). T. Livius Patavinus Historicus, augmented by two books, together with L. Flori’s Epitome. Mainz: Johann Schöffer, 1518–1519. This is the first edition of Livy’s monumental history of Rome to include Book XXXIII, printed here for the first time; working from a manuscript discovered in a monastery in Mainz, Johann Schöffer restored the missing text and also recovered the final chapters of Book XL, making this edition effectively the first complete edition of Livy’s surviving works. The preface by Erasmus of Rotterdam (1466–1536) also attributes to Johann Fust (c. 1400–1466), an associate of the printer’s father Peter Schöffer, a decisive role in the invention of printing with movable type, thereby lending the edition further significance for the history of typography. The numerous woodcut initials are traditionally attributed to the circle of Hans Holbein the Younger (1497–1543). The copy is further enriched with numerous early marginal annotations. Folio (325 × 210 mm). Title page set within a richly historiated woodcut border, repeated on the second title page preceding the text; a woodcut border incorporating the coat of arms of the dedicatee, Cardinal Albert of Brandenburg, on the dedication leaf; numerous woodcut initials. A clean copy with wide margins (quire Pp is shorter, probably supplied from another copy; quire Aa has been erroneously bound after quire C, following p. 296). Mid-nineteenth-century half-vellum binding, with a spine label bearing gilt lettering. Provenance: numerous contemporary marginal annotations, particularly in the first two books and in the chapters devoted to the Second Punic War; Hippolitus Orsonus sic., ownership inscription on the dedication leaf (? possibly Ippolito Orsini).
