Description
PETRARCA, Francesco (1304–1374). *Trionfi*. Venice: Peregrino de Pasquale and Domenico Bertocchi, 1486. [Colophon dated 8 April 1488].
A study copy, adorned with elegant illuminated initials, of Petrarch’s *Trionfi*, featuring commentaries by Bernardo Lapini da Siena, Francesco Filelfo and Girolamo Squarzafico, who were among the most authoritative humanist interpreters of Petrarch’s works. Curiously, the colophon to this first part bears the date 8 April 1488 as a typographical error, whilst the edition is unanimously dated 1486.
4to (278 × 200 mm). First part only (of 2; the second part, containing the *Canzoniere*, was published separately and is missing). 139 leaves (of 152; missing A–A3 containing the prologue, H2, H7, and M3–N2). 5 finely illuminated initials in gold and colours, with several further initials illuminated in gold or blue (restorations with added sections to the lower margins of some leaves at the beginning of the volume). Modern full vellum; the earlier binding is preserved separately. Provenance: Molza, Modena. (1)
