Description
PICO DELLA MIRANDOLA, Giovanni Francesco (1469–1533). *Examen vanitatis doctrinae gentium, et veritatis Christianae disciplinae*. Mirandola: Mazzocchi, 1520. Study copy of the first edition of one of the most significant works by Giovanni Francesco Pico della Mirandola, nephew of the celebrated Giovanni Pico. Written in open opposition to pagan philosophical culture and Renaissance scepticism, the *Examen vanitatis* represents one of the most extensive defences of the superiority of Christian revelation over the wisdom of the ancients. Pico subjects the principal philosophical schools of antiquity to rigorous critical examination, contrasting their supposed vanity with the truth of Christian doctrine, an approach that was to exert considerable influence on sixteenth-century religious thought. The edition is also of particular typographical interest, being one of only two books printed at Mirandola. Folio (310 × 220 mm). Spaces for initials with guide letters; printer’s mark on the recto of the final leaf (quires E–E6 and LL–LL6, and leaves V5–X1 are missing). Contemporary full vellum, handwritten title on the upper cover. (1)
