Description
PYTHAGORAS (570–495 BC); PHOCYLIDES (560–520 BC). Poemata Pythagorae et Phocylidis. Lyon: Jean de Tournes; Guillaume Gazeau, 1556. A rare Lyon edition of the philosophical and moral verses attributed to Pythagoras and Phocylides, first printed in the Aldine edition of Constantine Lascaris’s *Erotemata* of 1494–95. The present text, accompanied by a Latin translation and commentary by the German humanist Veit Amerbach (1503–1557), was first published in Strasbourg in 1539. The collection brings together the celebrated Golden Verses attributed to Pythagoras and the gnomic poem of Pseudo-Phocylides, two works that enjoyed a long and influential tradition as compendia of ethical and philosophical precepts. 8vo (170 × 108 mm). Title-page within a border of typographical ornaments; Greek text with Latin translation and commentary, printed in italic type (slight browning). Contemporary soft vellum binding, handwritten title on the spine. Provenance: Guglielmo Somigli (bookplate and stamp on the title-page). (1)
