Description
RAMUSIO, Giovanni Battista (1485–1557). *Delle navigationi et viaggi*. First volume… on Africa, and the land of the Priest Ianni… and as far as the Moluccan Islands. Venice: Giunti, 1554. Study copy containing only the text of the second edition of the first volume of Ramusio’s celebrated collection of voyages, the first major systematic compilation of European travel and exploration literature. Devoted to Africa and southern Asia, the volume brings together accounts of some of the most important explorations of the period, including the voyages of Vasco da Gama, Ludovico de Varthema and Duarte Barbosa, with extensive information on the Indian Ocean, the Arabian Peninsula and the Persian Gulf. Unfortunately, the three maps are missing from this copy. Folio (300 × 200 mm). Volume I only (of 3). Illustrations in the text, printer’s mark at the colophon. Missing the title page and the three double-page maps; foxing, slight water stains, early repairs to several leaves and to the final leaf. Contemporary stiff vellum (defects and some losses to the spine). Provenance: early manuscript inscriptions on the endpapers, ‘Di me Lazzarini’ and ‘Regalato a me Carlo Menicacci Laurenti di Foligno l’anno 1760’.
