Description
[SAINTS – RELICS]. A group of five devotional engravings relating to major Counter-Reformation cults of relics. Italy and Spain, 16th–17th century.
An interesting collection of five engravings linked by the theme of the veneration of relics and miraculous images. The lot comprises: a rare depiction of the Cross of Caravaca, accompanied by a prayer granting an indulgence in Spanish and a representation of the Blessed Sacrament (270 × 220 mm); the Holy Shroud of Christ, supported by three bishops and dedicated to Henri de Bourgnay (280 × 350 mm); the Miraculous Christ of San Quilino in the collegiate church of San Lorenzo Maggiore in Milan, dedicated to the provost Giovanni Ambrogio Turriano (268 × 150 mm); Saints Rasius and Anastasius, depicted before the Roman basilica of Santa Maria ad Martyres (the Pantheon), with an extensive text concerning their relics (313 × 220 mm); and, finally, an evocative engraving depicting the body of Saint Francis of Assisi on display in the Lower Basilica, bearing the coat of arms of the dedicatee Marcello Rondinino (340 × 245 mm).
