Description
SCALIGER, Joseph Justus (1540–1609). *De emendatione temporum*. Leiden: Officina Plantiniana, Raphelengius, 1598. An expurgated copy, containing handwritten annotations and deletions made in accordance with the directives of the Congregation of the Index, of the work that revolutionised chronological studies and laid the foundations of modern historical chronology. Through the systematic comparison of Greek, Latin, Hebrew, Arabic and other Eastern sources, Scaliger developed an innovative method for reconciling the various calendars and dating systems of antiquity, thereby enabling a more rigorous reconstruction of universal history. The *De emendatione temporum* exerted a profound influence on philology, ancient history, numismatics and the history of science, establishing itself as one of the fundamental works of European scholarship between the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. Folio (345 × 215 mm). Text printed in Roman, Greek, Hebrew, Arabic and other Eastern typefaces. Woodcut emblem of the Officina Plantiniana on the title page, numerous figures, diagrams, typographical tables and woodcut initials. Nineteenth-century binding with a vellum spine and a label with gilt lettering (as in the copy described). Provenance: a copy expurgated of passages deemed contrary to Catholic doctrine; the title page bears the inscriptions auctoris damnatis ... prohibitum cum expurgatione tamen permissione . (1)
