Description
FIORAVANTI, Leonardo (1517–1588). A group of three works by the celebrated Bolognese physician, including the first edition of *Il tesoro della vita humana*.
An interesting collection of three study copies of works by the Bolognese physician, surgeon and alchemist Leonardo Fioravanti, one of the most celebrated and controversial figures in Renaissance medicine. A travelling physician, tireless experimenter and highly successful author, Fioravanti contributed to the spread of a medical practice based on direct observation and practical experience, often challenging the established Galenic academic tradition. The lot includes the first edition of *Il tesoro della vita humana* (1570), one of his most successful works, devoted to the preservation of health and the treatment of the principal illnesses; the *Compendio de i secreti rationali* (1581), a collection of medical and pharmaceutical remedies and experimental techniques developed during his professional career; and the *Specchio di scientia universale* (1679), an extensive encyclopaedic work covering medicine, natural philosophy, alchemy and the practical arts.
