Description
ALSTED, Johann Heinrich (1588–1638). *Scientiarum omnium encyclopaediae*. Lyon: Huguetan, 1649.
A rare and monumental work (with only one auction record in the RBH), constituting the definitive edition of the first great systematic encyclopaedia produced in the German-speaking world. The theologian and philosopher Johann Heinrich Alsted devoted his scholarly life to the construction of a universal system of knowledge grounded in the unity of divine and secular learning. Conceived as both an intellectual guide and a mnemonic framework, the Encyclopaedia presents a rigorously ordered classification of the arts and sciences and became an important model for the organisation of modern knowledge. It exerted considerable influence on Comenius and, more broadly, on the encyclopaedic thought of Leibniz and Morhof, marking a significant milestone in seventeenth-century European intellectual history.
4 volumes, folio (375 × 240 mm). Engraved frontispiece with a portrait of the author in the first volume; title-pages printed in red and black with engraved vignettes; woodcut illustrations and diagrams; uncut copy (foxing and light water-stains, at times extensive). Contemporary carta rustica binding, handwritten titles on the spines (some wear and minor chipping). Provenance: contemporary ownership inscriptions on the title-pages, Scipionis Paretiis (?) cav. Bellunensis . (4)
