Description
BALDI, Camillo (1547–1634). *De humanarum propensionum ex temperamento*. [BOUND WITH:] *De naturali ex unguium inspectione*. Bologna: Bartolomeo Rossi, 1629.
A rare first edition, with no auction records found (RBH), comprising two curious treatises by the Bolognese philosopher and physician Camillo Baldi, devoted to the study of human nature through outward signs. The *De humanarum propensionum ex temperamento* examines the relationship between physical constitution, temperament and behaviour, offering an extensive analysis of individual psychological predispositions. The second treatise, *De naturali ex unguium inspectione*, explores the diagnostic and prognostic significance traditionally attributed to the examination of fingernails in ancient and Renaissance medicine. A professor of logic and philosophy at the University of Bologna for more than sixty years, Baldi is now chiefly remembered as the author of the *Trattato come da una lettera missiva si conoscano la natura e qualità dello scrittore* (1622), generally regarded as the first systematic study of graphology.
4to (215 × 150 mm). Two works bound in a single volume. First title page with a vignette bearing the coat of arms of the dedicatee; second with a vignette depicting Mercury; woodcut initials and headpieces (slight foxing). Contemporary full vellum, with a 19th-century leather spine label lettered in gilt (minor defects). (1)
