Description
BINNEY, Amos (1803–1847). The Terrestrial Air-Breathing Molluscs of the United States. Boston: Charles C. Little and James Brown, 1851–1892.
A complete copy, with hand-coloured plates, of the original three volumes of this monumental work devoted to the terrestrial pulmonate molluscs of the United States, one of the most important nineteenth-century publications on American malacology. Begun by Amos Binney, co-founder of the Boston Society of Natural History, the work remained unfinished at his death and was continued by Augustus A. Gould (1805–1866) for these first three volumes, and by Binney’s son William G. Binney (1833–1909) for the subsequent four volumes, published up to 1892, who completed the work through the *Bulletin of the Museum of Comparative Zoology* at Harvard University. Its exceptionally rich illustrative material, comprising finely engraved plates, many of them hand-coloured, makes it one of the most important scientific atlases devoted to North American mollusc fauna.
3 volumes, 4to (288 × 225 mm). 16 plates in the first volume and 88 in the third (numbered I–74, including several ‘bis’ and ‘tris’ plates), many hand-coloured (slight browning). Publisher’s half-leather binding, gilt titles on spine labels (slight rubbing). (3)
