Description
GALILEI, Galileo (1564–1642). Works… Volume II (of 4). Padua: Giuseppe Comino, 1744.
The second volume, containing, amongst other works, the *Sidereus Nuncius* and *Il Saggiatore*, from the most important eighteenth-century edition of Galileo’s works, edited by the Abbot Giuseppe Toaldo, astronomer and mathematician at the University of Padua. Revised on the basis of the 1718 Florence edition, it represents the first systematically organised collection of Galileo’s writings, enriched with numerous previously unpublished texts and newly arranged by subject. In addition to the *Sidereus Nuncius*, *Il Saggiatore* and the studies on sunspots, the second volume includes Galileo’s scientific letters addressed to various correspondents and intellectuals.
4to (260 × 190 mm). Astronomical illustrations in the text, woodcut initials, head- and tailpieces, uncut (occasional foxing). Contemporary boards, handwritten title on spine label (partially loose, some defects). (1)
