Description
RENTY, Gaston-Jean-Baptiste de (1611–1649). *L'introducteur charitable en la cosmographie*. Paris: Clouzier, 1639.
A rarely illustrated treatise on geocentric cosmography (only one auction record in RBH), written by Baron Gaston de Renty, a prominent figure in seventeenth-century French spirituality, renowned for his intense mystical life and charitable commitment. The work combines scientific, moral and religious elements, presenting cosmography as a means of understanding Creation and as an instrument of spiritual elevation. At a time marked by debate between competing cosmological models, the text aligns itself with the geocentric tradition for pedagogical and devotional purposes, offering an accessible yet erudite synthesis of contemporary astronomical knowledge.
8vo (163 × 105 mm). Two parts in one volume, with numerous woodcut astronomical illustrations in the text (some discolouration). Contemporary carta rustica (spine missing). (1)
