Description
[FUNERALIA]. Large obituary broadside for Elisabetta Gradonica. [Venice], 1795.
Large funeral broadside for Elisabetta, daughter of Giacomo Gradonico, a member of one of the most illustrious families of the Venetian patriciate. The text, written entirely in Latin in the style of classical monumental inscriptions, commemorates the virtues of the young woman and recounts how, having travelled to the thermal baths of Abano (Thermarum Aponi usus) to restore her health, she was struck by a sudden illness and died on 25 August 1795 at the age of twenty-seven. The epitaph concludes by noting that her husband, Francesco Miliari, Count of Belluno, erected the monument amidst tears (uxori amantissimae cum lacrymis posuit). Printed obituaries of this kind, intended for posting or distribution on the occasion of funerals, are extremely rare and provide valuable evidence of the funerary culture of aristocratic families between the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, drawing on the humanist epigraphic tradition in both form and language.
Typographic broadside (770 × 560 mm), printed on laid paper. In excellent condition. [WITH:] The same broadside in leaflet format (275 × 190 mm). (2)
