Description
[BINDING – WINE]. LAMBRUSCHINI, Luigi (1776–1854). Empty armorial binding for Cardinal Luigi Lambruschini. [Rome, c. 1831–1854]. A remarkable armorial binding for Cardinal Luigi Lambruschini, its decoration seemingly conceived as an elaborate heraldic pun on the owner’s name. The cardinal’s coat of arms, prominently displayed on the covers and featuring three vines, is surrounded by an exuberant border of vine tendrils, leaves and bunches of grapes, creating a witty association between the name Lambruschini and Lambrusco wine. The result is a playful form of canting arms, in which the imagery of the vine serves as a visual allusion to the cardinal’s surname. A Barnabite cleric, Luigi Lambruschini was created a cardinal by Gregory XVI in 1831 and served as his Secretary of State from 1836 to 1846, becoming one of the most influential figures in the Roman Curia and a leading candidate for the papacy at the conclave of 1846. Folio (315 × 210 mm). Full calfskin armorial binding for Cardinal Luigi Lambruschini, the covers centred with his large gilt cardinal’s coat of arms within a double gilt border, the inner frame richly embossed with vine leaves and bunches of grapes, in a visual allusion to the name Lambruschini and Lambrusco.
