First edition of Ludovico Antonio Muratori’s monumental historical work, regarded as his masterpiece. Organised in annalistic form, the Annali d’Italia trace the history of the Italian peninsula from its origins to 1749, drawing upon an exceptionally extensive body of manuscript and printed sources, many of which Muratori himself had previously collected and published in the Rerum Italicarum Scriptores. The work marked a turning point in Italian historiography through the rigorous critical method applied to the analysis of sources and remained for over a century the principal reference work for the study of Italian history.
