Description
MAZARREDO SALAZAR, José de (1745–1812). Rudiments of Naval Tactics for the Instruction of Junior Naval Officers. Madrid: Joaquín Ibarra, 1776.
First edition of the seminal treatise on naval tactics by the Spanish admiral José de Mazarredo Salazar, one of the most eminent figures in the Spanish Navy, who served during the American War of Independence and the Napoleonic Wars. Written as a manual for the training of junior officers of the Royal Spanish Navy, the work represents one of the earliest systematic attempts to codify fleet manoeuvres according to rigorous scientific and mathematical principles, contributing to the renewal of Spanish naval doctrine in the years immediately preceding the American War of Independence. Illustrated with 40 folding plates, the work was printed by Joaquín Ibarra, widely regarded as the greatest Spanish printer of the eighteenth century, and ranks among the most elegant examples of eighteenth-century Spanish printing.
4to (240 × 180 mm). 40 folding engraved plates, with wide margins (minor water-staining to the upper margin of the first 10 plates). Contemporary full calf, covers with gilt border, richly gilt spine in compartments with raised bands and a gilt-lettered label (1)
