Description
[NAPOLEONICA] ANTOMMARCHI, Francesco (1780–1838). Atlas des Memoires du docteur Antommarchi, ou les derniers moments de Napoleon. Paris: Barrois, 1824.
A rare first edition of the illustrated atlas accompanying the celebrated memoirs of Dr Francesco Antommarchi, Napoleon Bonaparte’s (1769–1821) last personal physician during his exile on Saint Helena. The work brings together the principal views and visual documents relating to the Emperor’s final years, depicting the places associated with his captivity, Longwood House, Geranium Valley and the topography of the island. It constitutes one of the most important visual records of Napoleon’s captivity and death and was to exert considerable influence on nineteenth-century Napoleonic iconography.
5 loose plates, oblong folio (235 × 705 mm). Engraved title page with vignette, map of the island of Saint Helena, plan of Longwood, and two lithographic views of Longwood and Geranium Valley (foxing, creases and marginal water stains). (5)
