Description
[NAPOLEONICA – RUSSIA]. Memorable Design and Description of a Column Formed of Cannons Erected in Moscow… from the Conquered French Artillery. [c.1812].
A rare commemorative engraving, with only one recorded appearance at auction, in 2009 (RBH), depicting the column, 92 braccia high, or approximately 50 metres, erected in Moscow by order of Tsar Alexander I (1777–1825) and constructed from more than 1,200 cannons captured from Napoleon’s army following the disastrous retreat from Russia in 1812. The engraving depicts the monumental column formed from the captured French artillery, surrounded by an extensive explanatory text printed in three languages — English, Italian and Greek — reflecting the intention to convey its celebratory message to an international audience.
Engraving (450 × 600 mm). Slight staining and foxing. (1)
