Description
[NUMISMATICS]. A lot comprising two study copies: Jacopo Strada’s *Epitome Thesauri Antiquitatum* and Thomas Herbert’s *Numismata antiqua*.
An interesting pair of works devoted to ancient numismatics. Thomas Herbert’s work is one of the most important numismatic repertories of the early eighteenth century, illustrating hundreds of Greek and Roman coins from his celebrated collection, which was sold by Sotheby’s in the summer of 1848. Strada’s work, dedicated to the banker and collector Jakob Fugger, is the first Latin edition of his catalogue of portraits of Western emperors from Caesar to Charles V, comprising approximately 400 illustrations.
HERBERT, Thomas, 8th Earl of Pembroke (1656–1733). *Numismata antiqua in tres partes divisa*. [London], 1746. 3 (of 4) parts in one volume, 4to (200 × 180 mm). 3 engraved title-pages, one for each part, and 264 (of 267) engraved plates, excluding the index, as follows: Part I with general title-page and plates 1–38 (plate 12 missing); Part II with one unnumbered plate, a title page numbered as plate 1, and plates 2–98 (plate 89 missing); Part III with a title page numbered as plate 1 and plates 2–129 (plate 117 missing). Nineteenth-century English binding with leather spine (covers detached, with defects and scratches). [IN LOT WITH:] STRADA, Jacopo (1507–1588). *Epitome Thesauri Antiquitatum, hoc est, Imperatorum Romanorum Orientalium et Occidentalium Iconum*. Lyon: Jean de Tournes, 1553. 4to. Approximately 400 woodcut medallion portraits of Roman emperors against black backgrounds; woodcut initials and ornaments (missing leaves A–B2 and v1, v4, including the title page; light water-staining and a small wormhole in the lower margin of several quires). Contemporary full vellum, handwritten title on the spine. Provenance: early annotations on the endpapers; traces of early stamps on leaf B3. (3)
