Description
TOMASI, Tomaso (1608–1658). The Life of Duke Valentino. Montechiaro: Lucio Vero, 1670.
Second edition of the first biography devoted to Cesare Borgia (1475–1507), known as Duke Valentino, written by the Pesaro-born clergyman Tomaso Tomasi. Drawing on archival documents and contemporary chronicles, the work reconstructs the life and character of the celebrated military leader and son of Pope Alexander VI (1431–1503), offering a considerably more balanced historical portrait than the polemical tradition that had contributed to his legend. It was precisely because of this reassessment of Borgia that the volume was placed on the Index Librorum Prohibitorum. Long attributed to Gregorio Leti (1630–1701), the work is now unanimously recognised as Tomasi’s; despite the false Montechiaro imprint, bibliographical studies identify the printer as Joan Blaeu in Amsterdam.
12mo (140 × 80 mm). Printer’s mark on the title-page (short marginal tears to quire OO of the second part, with no loss of text). Contemporary binding with leather spine, gilt titles and decorations, red edges. (1)
