Description
[VENICE]. The Baiamonte Tiepolo Conspiracy and Other Notorious Crimes and Political Events of the Republic of Venice. Manuscript, 18th–19th century. An important collection of manuscripts documenting some of the most celebrated political conspiracies and judicial cases in the history of the Venetian Republic, compiled in the late eighteenth or early nineteenth century. It begins with the conspiracy of Baiamonte Tiepolo and Marco Querini on 15 June 1310, the attempted overthrow of the Venetian government which led to the creation of the Council of Ten, which later became the Republic’s principal body for matters of state security. The manuscript continues with accounts and documents relating to other pivotal episodes in the history of the Serenissima, including the conspiracy of Doge Marin Falier (1355), the trial of Giacomo Foscari (1444) and the subsequent deposition of his father, Doge Francesco Foscari (1457), the celebrated case of Antonio Foscarini (1622), and the affair of Renier Zeno (1628), together with further trials, proclamations and judicial sentences. Spanning more than three centuries of Venetian history, the collection provides a significant record of the antiquarian and historiographical interest in the political, institutional and judicial history of the Republic. Manuscript, folio (300 × 210 mm). [7], 181 leaves, followed by [6] blank leaves, written in brown ink and preceded by an index. Upper and outer edges uncut; on heavy, well-preserved paper. Contemporary half-vellum binding over paper-covered boards (minor signs of wear), manuscript title on the spine: 1310 Congiura di Bajamonte Tiepolo ed altre . (1)
