Description
[ARUNDEL SOCIETY]. A set of four chromolithographs after Italian Renaissance masters. London: Arundel Society, 1858–1867.
An interesting set of four large chromolithographs published by the Arundel Society, founded in London in 1848 as the Society for Promoting the Knowledge of Art, with the aim of disseminating knowledge of the great Italian masters amongst the British public through high-quality reproductions, particularly of fourteenth- and fifteenth-century frescoes. Supported, amongst others, by John Ruskin (1819–1900), the Society made a significant contribution to the rediscovery of Italian art in Victorian England, in close harmony with the aesthetic ideals of the Pre-Raphaelites, whose movement was founded in the same year, 1848. The plates, distributed primarily to members via an annual subscription and also sold separately, were high-quality prints: during the 1860s, the larger chromolithographs could cost around one pound or more each, a sum equivalent to several days’ wages for a skilled worker and exceeding the weekly wage of many categories of labourers.
Comprising: RAPHAEL. Poetry, from a fresco in the Stanze of the Vatican. Second Annual Publication, 1867; PERUGINO. The Adoration of the Kings; FILIPPINO LIPPI. The Vision of Saint Bernard. Second Annual Publication, 1858; DOMENICO GHIRLANDAIO. Zacharias Naming His Son John. Second Annual Publication, 1861. 4 large-format chromolithographs. London: Arundel Society, 1858–1867 (slight foxing). (4)
