Description
[VATICAN MUSEUMS]. The Pio-Clementino Museum [WITH:] The Chiaramonti Museum, attached to the Pio-Clementino. Rome: Ludovico Mirri, 1782–1807; Antonio D’Este and Gaspare Capparoni, 1808–1843. published between the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. The Pio-Clementino Museum, illustrated by Giovanni Battista and Ennio Quirino Visconti, provides a systematic record of the outstanding collection of antiquities assembled under Popes Clement XIV and Pius VI, and played a decisive role in the dissemination of Neoclassical taste throughout Europe. The collection is complemented by the Museo Chiaramonti, dedicated to the new galleries established under Pius VII. Its first volume appeared in 1808 under the direction of Filippo Aurelio Visconti, whilst the second and third, with descriptions by Antonio Nibby, were published in 1837 and 1843 respectively, extending this monumental record to include the significant new acquisitions made by the Vatican during the first half of the nineteenth century. 10 volumes, folio (608 × 420 mm; 590 × 415 mm for the final volume). 10 portraits, 2 plans and 570 plates (occasional foxing). Plates as follows: 1) Pio-Clementino: 7 volumes, engraved title-pages bearing the papal coat of arms, 7 engraved portraits, a folding plan of the museum and 379 engraved plates: 355 numbered plates (4 on 2 sheets), 2 bis plates, 3 unnumbered plates, 4 plates showing views of the museum and 15 lettered plates. 2) Chiaramonti: 3 volumes, engraved title pages bearing the papal coat of arms, 3 portraits, 138 numbered plates and 3 lettered plates. 2.1) Monumenti Amaranziani (part of the third volume of the Museo Chiaramonti): one plan and 50 plates (some pairs of plates printed on a single sheet). Neoclassical bindings from the early decades of the nineteenth century in full calf, covers with gilt geometric borders, gilt decorations and titles on spine labels, gilt edges and marbled endpapers (minor defects). The third volume of the Museo Chiaramonti is bound in red half-morocco, with gilt decorations and the title on the spine. (10)
