Description
[NAPLES ARCHAEOLOGICAL MUSEUM]. Real Museo Borbonico. Naples: Stamperia Reale, 1824–1856.
First edition of the monumental official publication of the Royal Bourbon Museum, the most important illustrated catalogue of the collections now housed in the National Archaeological Museum of Naples. Compiled by numerous scholars under the patronage of the Bourbon court, the work systematically documents the principal antiquities preserved in the museum, with particular emphasis on finds from the excavations at Pompeii, Herculaneum and other sites around Vesuvius. The numerous engraved and lithographic plates reproduce paintings, mosaics, sculptures, bronzes, vases, gems and everyday objects, and remain an invaluable record of the state of the Neapolitan archaeological collections during the first half of the nineteenth century.
16 volumes, 4to (265 × 190 mm). Frontispieces in the first 15 volumes, 932 lithographic plates—some chromolithographic—relating to the museum, and 25 plates relating to the discovery of Pompeii (the latter numbered A and B, or AB when printed together; plate 33 in volume 12 has a duplicate plate, making a total of 61 plates numbered 1–60), approximately 60 plates per volume (plate 8 is missing from the first volume; volume 16 is missing plates 26–29 along with their accompanying explanations and the general index to the work; occasional foxing and sporadic staining). Contemporary bindings with vellum spines, gilt titles and volume numbers on labels (minor defects). The work is sold as described and is not subject to return. A volume-by-volume list of plates is available on request. (16)
