Description
[UFFIZI]. Museum Florentinum [CON:] A series of portraits by distinguished painters [E:] A series of original portraits by distinguished painters. Florence: Nestenus, Moucke, 1731–1766. A monumental first edition of the most ambitious illustrated catalogue of the Medici collections, regarded as the first illustrated inventory of the collections that would form the core of the Uffizi Gallery. The work comprises 741 engraved plates based on drawings by Giovanni Domenico Campiglia (1692–1768), Giovanni Domenico Ferretti (1692–1768) and Antonio Pazzi (1706–1768), including 200 plates of ancient gems, 100 of statues, 121 of coins and medals, and 320 portraits of distinguished painters. Begun under Grand Duke Gian Gastone de’ Medici (1671–1737) and continued under the House of Lorraine, the work systematically documents the principal archaeological and artistic treasures preserved in the Thesaurus Mediceus: ancient gems, classical statues, coins, medals and the celebrated series of artists’ portraits. Its exceptionally rich illustrative material, entrusted to some of the finest draughtsmen and engravers of the period, makes it one of the great masterpieces of eighteenth-century European antiquarian publishing. 13 parts in 11 volumes, large folio (453 × 362 mm). Title-pages printed in red and black, with engraved vignettes, headpieces, initials and tailpieces, and 741 engraved plates, comprising 200 plates of ancient gems, 100 of statues, 121 of coins and medals, and 320 portraits of distinguished painters; wide margins (occasional foxing). Nineteenth-century green half-leather, gilt titles on the spines (defects). (11)
